Ok, so you've been surfing the net with Internet Explorer, your Norton Antivirus 2003 has been expired since February 04, things just seem to be taking longer and longer to complete and just generally feel sluggish. What the heck is going on here?
Well, let me tell you, you are a victim of what we call spyware, or adware. I would classify this on the same level as a virus. They are small programs that get installed with free software, demos, file sharing programs, free screen savers and online poker sites. Ok so their origin is not limited to just those mentioned, but you get the point. You see, all that free stuff has to make their creator money somehow, and this is where adware comes in. Once a user is online, or connected to the internet, you will start to see "pop ups" for different products and web sites without even clicking on any links. The internet will seem to be extremely slow, that is because all of these programs run at the same time in the background and use your internet connection to send and receive information about your surfing habits.
Not to worry though, there are a few things you can do to save yourself.
1. Run a currently up to date Antivirus/Firewall Program at all times.
If you have Norton and it has expired, purchase a new license and run the online updates. You should be running a full virus scan at least once a week. If you are a little short on cash, or just cheap, there is a free product out there for personal use called AVG Free. It is a great little AV program that you will never have to worry about expiring. As far as a free firewall program, try ZoneAlarm. You can get all of the programs I mention here at www.download.com. Which is also your best source for free software. They make sure that each program doesn't contain spyware. It also allows for a user rating system. Definitely worth checking out.
2. Use Microsoft's Antispyware Tool and Keep Windows Updated.
This is a tool provided by Microsoft that not only removes Spyware and Adware, but also runs in the background and prevents the installation of most malicious software. You can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Also, Microsoft is constantly working to make Windows a better operating system and they release periodic updates to make things run better, and more importantly, to close security holes not realized or noticed at the release date. What does this mean? Basically it means that no one is perfect and in order to correct mistakes updates must be made. In WindowsXP you can run these updates by going to Start/All Programs/Windows Update. I usually recommend that you select the Express option. Keep running the update program until no more updates can be found.
3. Run Ad-Aware Se and Spybot Search and Destroy Once a Week.
You can find both of these programs on download.com. They are free for personal use and really do an outstanding job of removing a lot of the nasties. Spybot also has an immunization feature that blocks identified bad guys from installing. Very neat stuff.
4. Don't Use File Sharing Programs
Out of all the infested systems I come across, I would say that at least 90% of them had some sort of file sharing program installed at one time or another. Here is the real deal about file sharing and why it isn't in your best interest. Using a file sharing program opens you up to all of the worst of the worst on the internet. Not only are you a lot more open to hack attacks and identity theft, but record companies are getting more aggressive in their fight against copyright infringment. I don't mean you might get sued, which you might, but rather that record companies are actually sharing fake song files that may or may not contain a virus and harm your operating system files and potentially render your PC useless until Windows is reinstalled. Trust me, just save yourself the trouble and buy your songs on itunes for $99 cents a pop. www.itunes.com.
5. Stop using Internet Explorer.
What?!? Now you have lost it. That must be what you are thinking. But why would I tell you to stop using the only tool that comes with your computer for browsing the net? Because there are better tools out there that are a lot less open to adware and spyware. Take Mozilla's Firefox browser. www.mozilla.com Firefox is not written like Internet Explorer and is less used. Therefor most spyware and adware will not work with Firefox. Just so you know, Firefox looks and acts just like IE. It even imports all of your IE favorites and settings the first time you use it. Mozilla also has a free replacement for Outlook called Thunderbird. Definitely worth checking out.
If you stick to these guidelines you should be able to surf the Net without worry and tell the folks at work how to help themselves when they start complaining about the same problems.

Detecting Spyware | Adware Spyware Removal Tools
Detecting Spyware is now a top priority
If you are anything like me you love to surf the net, but in the last year something has changed and that change is spyware – adware. After noticing my computer slowing considerably in speed and performance I downloaded a free adware removal program from the net.
I had tried all kinds of diagnostic programs thinking that it was my system that had errors but none were found. I even thought that my hard drive was failing. I decided to try a free download to see if detecting spyware was the answer to fix my computer and of course just like everyone else I was always going to install an adware removal program I just never got around to it.
After running this adware removal tool I was horrified to see that I had three Trojans and numerous minor threats, these I could live with but the most terrifying thing for me was the Keylogger that was found on my computer. This was alarming to me as I managed numerous web sites, affiliate accounts and also adwords and adsense.
During the next week I spent most of my time changing passwords and watching and checking accounts to insure that I had not been invaded by this spyware menace. This was three weeks ago and I am not completely comfortable that I am safe.
So what I have learnt from this is you want to have peace of mind while surfing online then you need to install some kind of adware spyware removal tool that is capable of protecting your computer against adware, spyware, malware, trojans, dialers and worms.
The Internet has become a dangerous place for the naïve and inexperienced internet user and is delivering more threats to your home pc than ever before even the more advanced user is at risk if they have not taken precautions against this growing threat, and that is why you should protect yourself from identity theft (which by the way is now the number one cyber crime) or any other scams that can be caused by malicious adware or spyware.
As soon as you bring your computer home take it out of the box and plug it all in, I know for sure this is an exciting time but you should consider three things before connecting your new pc to the internet. Make sure you have an antivirus program, firewall program and thirdly and very important an adware spyware removal tool.
If you already own a computer and have been surfing the net but you feel your computer is acting strangely has slowed down and just isn’t functioning correctly, do yourself a favor and download a free adware removal program it could save you some problems later on.
As with anything you do on the internet or in life, you have choices and this is the same there are hundreds of adware spyware removal tools that are now available online, and some of the tools are no more than spyware in disguise and can cause more problems by adding more malicious adware spyware on to your system. Use a reputable adware removal tool that is trustworthy has a track record and that has its definitions upgraded often. If they are no upgrades to the definition files your adware removal tool will be useless within a week and you would have wasted your money and have no protection.
If you look at the online statistics of online spending and I will use one example from Ebay and it is estimated that 86,000,000 a day is spent on ebay. Most transactions would be processed through credit cards through a secure site and to me that is fine. The problem starts not at the sellers end but when you enter your credit card details into your computer screen with no protection there could be a keylogger installed on your machine that transmits this information to a third party.
If you want to enjoy your internet experience you should really do yourself a favor and get the adware spyware removal tools needed to protect you and your family while surfing online, it only takes a few minutes of your time and three inexpensive tools to ensure that you have peace of mind.
